Library 2020: 8 essays

Resultaten van onderzoek kunnen en worden in toenemende mate gepubliceerd zonder tussenkomst van uitgevers. In het digitale landschap van hoger en wetenschappelijk onderwijs speelt digitaal toegankelijk gemaakte informatie een steeds grotere rol. Het begin en het eind van de zoektocht naar informatie is online. Welke rol speelt de wetenschappelijke bibliotheek in de toekomst in dit informatielandschap. De Council for Library and Information Resources (CLIR) verzocht om 8 essays rond dit thema als voorbereiding op een discussie die werd gehouden op 27 februari in Washington DC. De essays zijn allemaal beschikbaar PDF format.

Paul Courant is er van overtuigd dat bibliotheken van de grote universiteiten een rol op zich moeten nemen als het gaat om collectioneren en integriteit van research data en output.

Andrew Dillon ziet een grote rol voor bibliotheken weggelegd als het gaat om het combineren en gebruiken van research data in het onderwijs. Richard E. Luce focust op de bibliotheek en E-research. Grote en kleine uitdagingen. Voor strategische denkers in de bibliotheek absoluut een mooie serie essays en een initiatief dat ook in Europa navolging verdient.

It can be argued that libraries are a means, not an end, yet we seem to be suffering from a lack of understanding of our means. Worse, it appears that the profession of librarianship as taught and practiced in many environments, is unclear how it can offer real value without retreating into the stock defenses of our role as the gatekeepers of quality, guarantors of access, and the sole possessors of the true knowledge of cataloging.
